Treat yourself like your best customer

Treat Yourself Like Your Best CustomerI’m near Chicago this week, working with a cool group of people. The topic under discussion is Awesome Customer Service – and what this services company has to do differently to up their (already great) game and go that extra mile.

It got me thinking about the kind of customer service we show ourselves. We spend a lot of time, energy and money to keep our best customers happy, content and loyal.

But do you offer yourself the same compliment? Do you treat yourself as if you are your best and most important customer, the way you’d expect to be treated at a 5* spa or flying transatlantic 1st class? Are you loyal to yourself?

Is the level of customer service you show yourself awesome, lukewarm or non-existent?

We all know how we like to be treated as a customer, but do you give yourself the same treatment?  Do you offer yourself a ready smile? Do you do what you promised yourself you would do? When was the last time you went above and beyond to keep yourself happy?

What do you need to do differently to up your game and treat yourself as if you are your best customer?

I resolve to not put off that massage one week further! Thanks for the reminder that if we don’t take care of ourselves we cannot take care of others.

  2. When I’m treating myself like my best customer I honor my commitment to walk everyday, I chill on the weekends and read a book before I go to bed. Need to work on the reading a book before I go to bed part! :)

    • Thanks Christie, Yes, I struggle with the reading before bed thing. I usually forget and go to bed when I’m exhausted and too tired to read. Time to form a new habit. Sarah x

  3. Sarah, this perspective is SO valuable, because I don’t think you can grow in your business unless you value yourself as much (if not more) than your best client! Otherwise, you may never feel like you deserve more for yourself … so when it comes down to you or the client, you sacrifice your happiness for the client but maybe resent it. Self first, not selfish.

  4. Thanks Sarah. Just this past week a friend said to me “I think it is great what you’re doing for everyone else, but I think you are much too hard on yourself.” I had to agree. So, I’m treating myself like my best customer and cutting myself some slak, creating real expectations daily and complimenting my successes. I appreciate this. Great timing!

    • Hi Pam – great that you can recognize where you need to cut yourself some slack. Don’t forget to treat yourself as if you’re flying 1st class! You know you deserve it. Sarah

  5. Great article & reminder Sarah!

I actually have a list of things to pick from every week (yup, I make sure I take care of me every week) I actually make it a date to treat myself like royalty.
And I encourage my clients to do the same.

For me it could be as simple as going to the bookstore to flip through books and magazines to massages, going out on a MNO, staying home with the hubby sans kids. I believe this is key to avoid burn out and the blahs as entrepreneurs.

Hi Yvette – I love the idea of a list to choose from. A Self Care Menu – sounds delicious. Love the idea.

  6. Sarah, I am a big believer in treating myself well… but I have found it is super easy to get out of practice as a business owner… I had to put myself in check this last week about my food and exercise. Because when I don’t take care of that aspect I really skimp on the self pleasure.. Great reminder. Muah!

I often think of the saying ‘the cobblers children have no shoes’ and this applies to me at times! I coach moms on how to take care of themselves…but don’t always follow my own advice! I love framing it as practicing good customer service on ourselves!!

    • SARAH steele says:

Hi Megan, Yes, sometimes when I’m complaining to my mother she’ll remind me that I teach this stuff and I should know better. She’s right of course. And if we weren’t struggling with this ourselves we wouldn’t be teaching it.

  8. This post has some pretty hot questions….and that is a good thing! Yes, we should be treating ourselves with awesome care and love! It is rather like self-care which is so terrible important for us to take care ourselves, our families, and our businesses! If we don’t put our own personal “customer care” first….we simply are not able to show up in our power for others. Thanks for the great reminders….
    Tina :)
