You are the boss of you

You are the boss of you – whether you like it or not.

I know, it can suck sometimes. Nobody else to blame, having to take responsibility for your own results, holding yourself accountable. Hard work some days. The good news is that because you are the boss of you, it’s within your control to set the rules, reward yourself and decide on the direction you want to take.

If you think of your life – how you show up in the world – as your job, how would you rate your performance?

Outstanding? Fair? Needs improvement?

Ask yourself these basic management questions:

What time do you expect yourself to show up to your day?

What behaviors does your boss (you) expect of you?

What are the consequences if you fall foul of those standards? (Because we know behavior is a function of consequence.)

What reward does the boss give you for great achievements?

How does your boss expect you to interact with others?

Write a job description for the role of YOU

How would you stack up against this job description?

Would you hire you?

What training or changes in behavior do you need?

After all, let’s face it, you’ve got the job whether you like it or not – now it’s just about making sure you have the right skills to do an outstanding job.

And, of course, on the other side of the pancake -

What kind of boss are you?

If you are the boss of you – are you a boss you’d want? What kind of boss are you?

One who rewards achievement or continually tells you how you are lacking?

One who sets clear and realistic goals or just gives vague direction?

One who reviews performance and gives feedback on a regular basis or waits until it’s too late to make much change?

One who shows empathy and compassion or drives without consideration of what’s going on?

One who motivates and inspires or makes you repeatedly do the tasks that make you lose the will to live?

What do you need to change about the way you boss yourself or how you show up to the work of your life each and every day?

Stay outstanding, be the best boss you can be and do what it takes to get that promotion to the next level of life!

Excellent exercise … I really had to stop to think at so many points in the piece. I intend to use this as a tool as often as I can to force this kind of reflection. I don’t do it naturally so these prompting questions are particularly useful. Well done, my dear.

  2. Nice post Sarah. Consequences. Sometimes we think that being self employed or single means that there is no one to answer to. In fact, when we answer to ourselves and our higher power. That all seems pretty clear. Giving ourselves positive feedback is a whole different story. I go a lot easier on my family and employees than I do on myself. Thank you for the reminder! ~Cathy

  3. Great post Sarah. As the boss of myself I need to schedule in vacation time and a solid end to my work day! :)

  4. Oh…great post. While I can think of a few points the employee-me needs to improve on, really the boss-me needs to get on the ball! I am SO hard on myself and at the same time don’t always give clear directions. This is a great exercise. It could also apply to parenting, I think….

  5. Wow! Powerful questions! Immediately threw me into self reflection. I think the one that made me stop and pause was… “would you hire you?” and thought… oh no! would I? And I realize, for the tasks I do, I certainly would! but not for the things I am NOT good at! hahaha! And I know those and interestingly, I know exactly what I need and am planning on hiring someone for those tasks. So great questions for clarity! LOVE THIS!

  6. Okay, okay, I get it.

The Universe is asking me to wake up early and get to work. I swear. Your post and something else I just read told me this.

    Okay.
    I am on it :)
